Donner Canadian Foundation Recognizes Performance in the Non-Profit Sector
TORONTO, ON>>> The Honourable Hilary M. Weston, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, presented the newly-established Donner Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services today at a luncheon in Toronto. These awards, to be made on an annual basis, represent the first time agencies in the non-profit sector have been recognized based on an objective standard of efficiency and effectiveness. "We had two hopes with these awards," says Patrick Luciani, Executive Director, Donner Canadian Foundation, "to recognize and encourage the spirit of initiative and independence, and to provide donors with assistance in their assessment of charities. We are very pleased with the outstanding caliber of the finalists, it gives us great pleasure to recognize organization that are accomplishing so much." Awards totaling $55,000 were presented to agencies in seven categories: child care, educational services, prevention and treatment of substance abuse, delivery of services to seniors, delivery of services to the disabled, provision of basic necessities, and crisis intervention and counselling. The $25,000 Donner Canadian Foundation Award for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services was given to Sarnia-Lambton ReboundA Program for Youth for overall excellence among the agencies. Sarnia-Lambton Rebound provides early intervention, mentoring and life-skill programs for low at risk youth and symbolizes excellence in the non-profit sector and the advancement of grassroots level work. The Donner Canadian Foundation, with the assistance of The Fraser Institute, established the awards this year to recognize the importance and effectiveness of local, voluntary organizations in solving local, community problems. The program was created to promote efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of services by non-profit organizations. It also establishes a source of data in a sector which has very little objective data available. Additional awards of $5,000 each were made in these categories:
