CALGARY, AB,Preston Manning, former Leader of the
Official Opposition, will become a Senior Fellow of The Fraser Institute upon
his retirement from Parliament at the end of this year. The announcement was
made today by Dr. Michael Walker, Executive Director of the Institute.
"I am looking forward," said Mr. Manning, "to working with the Fraser
Institute on such subjects as the advancement of fiscal conservatism, 'looking
beyond' the fiscal agenda, the reconciliation of fiscal and social
conservatives, democratic conservatism, and a conservative constitutional
agenda."
Preston Manning has played an historical role in shaping Canada's future by
helping to found both the Reform Party of Canada and the Canadian Alliance.
Under Mr. Manning's leadership, the Reform Party grew from a western-based
protest party to become the Official Opposition in Parliament in just ten
years.
"Preston Manning is one of Canada's best known advocates for fundamental
policy reform and we look forward to welcoming his fertile intellect to our
organization," says Dr. Walker.
"By becoming a Senior Fellow of the Fraser Institute, Mr. Manning will have
the opportunity to do research, to guide the research of others, to publish his
views in the Institute's publications, and to participate in public debate on
the central issues of the day," Walker added.
Tomorrow in Calgary, Mr. Manning will deliver the Dr. Harold Walter Siebens
Lecture, in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting of the Institute. Mr.
Manning will reflect on Canada's economic and social landscape in his
presentation, "Now What? Reflections on the Revolution in Progress."
The Fraser Institute is an independent public policy organization based in

market-based solutions to public policy challenges. Mr. Manning will work from
the Institute's Calgary office and will focus on issues of national
importance.
Mr. Manning is a distinguished addition to The Fraser Institute's diverse
