CALGARY, AB,—Preston Manning, former Leader of the Official Opposition, will become a Senior Fellow of The Fraser Institute upon his retirement from Parliament at the end of this year. The announcement was made today by Dr. Michael Walker, Executive Director of the Institute.

"I am looking forward," said Mr. Manning, "to working with the Fraser Institute on such subjects as the advancement of fiscal conservatism, 'looking beyond' the fiscal agenda, the reconciliation of fiscal and social conservatives, democratic conservatism, and a conservative constitutional agenda."

Preston Manning has played an historical role in shaping Canada's future by helping to found both the Reform Party of Canada and the Canadian Alliance. Under Mr. Manning's leadership, the Reform Party grew from a western-based protest party to become the Official Opposition in Parliament in just ten years.

"Preston Manning is one of Canada's best known advocates for fundamental policy reform and we look forward to welcoming his fertile intellect to our organization," says Dr. Walker.

"By becoming a Senior Fellow of the Fraser Institute, Mr. Manning will have the opportunity to do research, to guide the research of others, to publish his views in the Institute's publications, and to participate in public debate on the central issues of the day," Walker added.

Tomorrow in Calgary, Mr. Manning will deliver the Dr. Harold Walter Siebens Lecture, in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting of the Institute. Mr. Manning will reflect on Canada's economic and social landscape in his presentation, "Now What? — Reflections on the Revolution in Progress."

The Fraser Institute is an independent public policy organization based in Vancouver, with offices in Calgary and Toronto. The Institute specializes in market-based solutions to public policy challenges. Mr. Manning will work from the Institute's Calgary office and will focus on issues of national importance.

Mr. Manning is a distinguished addition to The Fraser Institute's diverse roster of Senior Fellows including Murray Allen M.D., Professor Eugene Beaulieu, Professor Paul Brantingham, Professor Barry Cooper, Professor Steve Easton, Professor Herb Emery, Professor Tom Flanagan, Gordon Gibson, Dr. Herbert Grubel, Professor Ron Kneebone, Professor Rainer Knopff, Dr. Owen Lippert, Professor Ken McKenzie, Professor Jean-Luc Migue, Professor Ted Morton, Professor Filip Palda, and Professor Christopher Sarlo.
