MEDIA RELEASE
VANCOUVER, B.C. > > > Five British Columbia residents have been selected by one of Canada's most respected think tanks to participate in the annual Student Leaders' Colloquium, May 12-15, 1995 -- a program designed to explore solutions to Canada's social and economic problems. The Fraser Institute announced today that Mr. Arka Chorbajian and Mr. Kevin Garvey of Delta, Mr. Leigh Large of Victoria, Mr. Marc Law of Coquitlam, and Ms. Tracey Nicholls Taylor of New Westminster have been selected from Kwantlen College, University of British Columbia, University of Victoria, and C.G.A. Association of B.C. to convene with 15 other Canadian students for a weekend long program of discussion and deliberation about the pressing economic policy questions of our time. The twenty students were chosen for their leadership and communication abilities. The Vancouver meeting, sponsored in part by Canadian Airlines International, is the culmination of a year long program of discussions which the Institute has hosted in Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal involving over 725 students.
"These students, having been identified as some of the brightest in the country," said Dr. Michael Walker, Executive Director of the Fraser Institute, "will spend two days in an exploration of ideas with other students from across the country. The Institute's aim is to focus their minds on economic policy issues so that they are prepared to deal with the challenges they may have to face as the policy makers of tomorrow."
About the B.C. students chosen....
Arka Chorbajian is a full-time student attending both Kwantlen College studying financial management, and Amalgamated Construction Association where he is working on a construction management diploma. Arka plans to study Mandarin at U.B.C. He would like to either continue in the construction industry as a contractor or work in the securities business.
Kevin Garvey is a part-time student studying financial planning. He begins a Canadian Securities Course in September and will go onto complete a Chartered Financial Planner program in 1996/1997. Kevin has had various newspaper articles published in The Financial Post and The Vancouver Province. He currently works as an Investment Advisor with Great Pacific Management Co. Ltd.
Leigh Large was born in Victoria where he attended St. Michael's University School. After graduating, he went onto the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania studying finance and entrepreneurial management. Leigh's interest in the economy and the role of government will take him to Europe next year where he begins a course of study in economics and politics at Oxford University.
Marc Law is a third year honours economics student at the University of British Columbia. After completing his B.A., Marc intends to go onto graduate school to complete a Ph.D. in economics. He states, "for the past few years, I have maintained a keen interest in public policy issues and I hope to pursue a career which will involve the economic analysis of public policy issues".
Tracey Nicholls Taylor works in the field of public practice accounting, mainly in income tax preparation, advice and research. She is currently enrolled in the Certified General Accountants program with long term plans to attend law school and, ultimately, practise law as it relates to taxation and intellectual property rights.
