According to Pierre Berton, "one thing that holds us together is the tension over Quebec-that is one of the fundamental things we have in common" (Maclean's, July 1, 1994, p. 44). In the same vein, Toronto artist Charles Pachter suggests that "we will be condemned to being together, the French and English. That is what makes Canada unique" (Maclean's, July 1, 1994, p. 41).
