40

On October 30, 1995, the Quebec referendum showed the growing strength of the sovereigntist movement among francophone and pur laine Quebeckers. The vote was 50.6 percent "No" and 49.4 percent "Yes." Generally, see Maclean's, November 6, 1995. A CBC/Maclean's poll conducted in November 1996 found that 49 percent of Quebeckers (and 42 percent of all Canadians) think it is likely that Quebec will be a separate country in the next decade. What is more, 37 percent of all Canadians, including 55 percent of Quebeckers, find that an acceptable solution. See Maclean's, December 30, 1996/January 6, 1997, pp. 40-41.
