44 If Canadians are secure in their identity, they do not need to be reminded constantly about the differences. They know who they are and what they stand for. Thus I conclude that the distinctiveness fetish is the product of some Canadians who are anxious and insecure and who need constant reminders that they are not like the "other" to define who they are. I have no doubt that the vast majority of Canadians know who they are and have no desire to become Americans. This makes the efforts at differentiation all the more remarkable because they do not produce the important differences between Canadians and Americans.
