Last month, The Fraser Institute held its first annual Student Leaders Alumni Colloquium, bringing together 27 invited participants from across the country for a two-day program in Vancouver. They represented a variety of backgrounds ranging from finance, business, medicine, academia, law, and the non-profit sector. One is a Member of Parliament, and several others are assistants or political advisors to MPs in all five of Canada’s official federal political parties. One participant, Howard Markowitz, summed up the experience as “an invaluable opportunity to discuss the ideas that will shape Canada in the 21st century.” Another, Eric Duhaime, explained that “working in politics full-time is so demanding that we don’t find any time to think about what we really think and why we are doing it. Fortunately, The Fraser Institute’s seminars give us a unique opportunity [to do that.]” The Institute wishes to acknowledge the support of a number of companies and individuals who generously contributed to this event: Rothmans, Benson & Hedges; Command Drilling Inc.; Lincoln-McKay Development Company Ltd.; Great Pacific Management Co. Ltd.; ATCO Group of Companies; Inwest Investments Ltd.; Neil S. Harvie; and two additional supporters who wish to remain anonymous. Thank you.

The winners of the Student Essay Competition on Canadian Health Care have been selected; their names and scholastic affiliations are printed on page 6 of this issue of Fraser Forum. Special thanks to the contest sponsor The Henry & Berenice Kaufmann Foundation of Montreal. One of the entrants was accompanied by this note: “The Fraser Institute has provided me with some great experiences over the past year. I have learned so much by attending your events. It is my hope that this essay will contribute something back to an organization that has treated me with such honour and respect”—Brad Corbett, St. Catharines, Ontario.

This past month, Dr. Michael Walker addressed numerous groups across the country including two student conferences and the Canadian Payroll Association in Vancouver, Natural Resources Canada in Ottawa, the World Taxpayers’ Conference and the Canadian Electricity Association Conference.

A number of notable guests visited the Fraser Institute recently. They include Michael Taube of Toronto, Publisher/ Editor of From the Right; Dr. Byeong-Ho Gong, President, The Korea Center for Free Enterprise; Herve Joly, Financial Attache, Embassy of France, Washington, DC; Michel Connen, French Trade Commissioner, Vancouver; Bill Deacon and Dr. Roy Sinclair of the Alberta Institute for Direct School Funding; and Tony Sorrenti, First Secretary (Economic) Canadian Embassy, Beijing, China.

The Institute featured a lively luncheon debate at the recent Electronic Commerce: Free Markets in Cyberspace conference in Vancouver. Debating the question, “Is Anti-Trust Legislation Necessary to Preserve Competitive Markets in Information Technology?” were two well-known and worthy opponents from Washington, DC—Robert A. Levy, Senior Fellow in Constitutional Studies at the CATO Institute, and Kenneth Wasch, President of the Software Publishers Association. Thanks go to our sponsors for this event: Business in Vancouver, Yorkton Securities Inc., and B.C. Tel Interactive.
