Fraser Forum September 98

Editor’s Notes

As many long-term readers may remember, Fraser Forum has evolved considerably over the years. When I joined the Institute in January 1991, Fraser Forum was a small pocket-sized pamphlet, bound in a coloured construction-paper type cover, consisting mainly of written versions of Michael Walker’s radio commentaries. It moved on to include articles by other Institute authors, particularly Walter Block and Sally Pipes, and covered many more topics than those addressed on the executive director’s radio program.

In June 1991, the magazine changed its look, but kept its size. We updated the font, made the layout easier to follow, standardized the cover design, and added some new authors.

The next big change came in 1994 when we decided to go to the larger, 8½ x 11 inch format. The new size let us show more and bigger tables and charts to illustrate the original research we were presenting. Our circle of authors continued to expand and the topics they covered ranged from labour issues to health care to the environment to justice to Canadian unity to the debt and deficit, to name just a few. The Critical
Issues Bulletins, single-issue studies presented in the Fraser Forum format, also expanded and evolved in keeping with the new style.

Now it is time to make a few more changes. Over the years, some readers have suggested that we spice up the magazine by adding some graphics and updating our presentation of charts and tabular material. You’ve also asked that we make the cover more appealing and tell you a bit more about our authors. For our part, we want to ensure that you receive the same quality research we’ve tried to provide for years, and the same incisive editorials you’ve come to expect.

We think this new format goes a long way towards achieving these goals. We hope you enjoy our new look. Let us know what you think.
