Countries in the News
Almost two-thirds of CBC's (62 percent) and over half of CTV's (53 percent) stories focused primarily on Canada. Remaining reports either focused on other countries or contained no geographical focus. Table 1, the "Top Ten Countries in the News" on CBC and CTV, shows that the country other than Canada that was most frequently the focus of a news story on the national networks was the United States, at 27 percent of CBC's and 38 percent of CTV's external coverage. The United Kingdom was a distant second on the top ten list. It was the focus of 12 percent of CBC's news reports and 11 percent of CTV's news reports that focused their attention on countries other than Canada. The high proportion of stories from the UK resulted from the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Following even further behind, and coming third on both CBC's and CTV's top ten list was Israel, which was the focus of 7 percent of CBC's and 5 percent of CTV's attention to other countries (table 1).
Note: Percentages do not add up to 100% because the table only includes the first 10 countries most mentioned in the news. Back to On Balance Main Page
